LHC on = the End of the Universe?

One of the most exciting physics projects in recent years, the Large Hadron Collider is the worlds largest and highest energy collider in the world.  Once completed it will (among other things) discover the infamous and elusive Higgs boson – a particle that would help explain why things have mass in our universe!

So why isnt the LHC running?  On Sept 10th 2008 it was turned on and as of Sept 19 2008 a fault between two superconducting magnets caused it to be shut down – before it was able to produce any actual results. Delay after delay has cause the repair of the LHC to continually be delayed so that the latest estimate is mid Nov 2009.

So it is simply a matter of a super complicated machine having to be perfect? or is it the physical laws of the universe preventing the LHC from powering up (hah! got you there)  Take a look at the Chronology protection conjecture – this could be a similar type of effect -  An exerpt from the article

“But attempts to incorporate quantum effects into general relativity using semiclassical gravity seem to make it plausible that vacuum fluctuations would drive the energy density on the boundary of the time machine (the Cauchy horizon of the region where closed timelike curves become possible) to infinity, destroying the time machine at the instant it was created or at least preventing anyone outside it from entering it. The question then arises: is this apparent censorship of closed timelike curves a global constraint of physics, in the same way as a conservation law, or is it a series of accidental coincidences?”

Is this the universes way of saying – Fuck off – dont turn this shit on!!  ?

    friggin’ minocks! blast ‘em chewie!

what if 2 universes were created the moment they powered it up… one universe where it didn’t work (the universe that we are in), and the other universe in where the machine worked, but somehow killed us all… (going for the quantum suicide theory here) and no matter how many times we try to “commit suicide”, we cannot.

or what if the unwanted result of creating a black hole was accomplished and we are currently inside of it without a clue that it even exists. what if locking us in the black hole the universes way of isolating us so we do not actually turn this thing on and collapse the whole universe.

or what if this thing will detect the other dimensions of our universe (as the bbc article said), but the inhabitants of these other dimensions do not want us to see them and sabotaged it (I’m thinking some 2012 shit here… 4th and 5th dimensional monsters returning soon). Hell, maybe they won’t even get this thing working until 2012… ???

or what if understaning mass is understanding God… and we will never be able to understand God (not the loser who logged into here as GOD!)

“Experiment is the basis of the scientific method, without which there
would be no modern world as we know it”

We tried to figure out what made an atom and we discovered the electron
    - now we have Xrays, electron microscopes, chemo treatments – Quantum
mechanics was developed and now we have electronics, etc! Once they
discover a particle that actually contains mass – maybe they can find
out how to manipulate it – Anti-gravity? Im pretty sure that would be
high up on the usefulness scale. From all of these Expensive projects
(LHC, Space Station, Mars Rovers, etc) comes technological progress -
which in turn filters into our everyday life.

Check out this site for more arguments/explanations on why the LHC is
supposed to be awesome – http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7598996.stm

I heard it wouldn’t work because Minocks keep chewing on the power cables. There is one very importany question that I’m not hearing when it comes to the LHC and the Higgs bosson, who the fuck cares? What praticle application does knowing if this particle exists have. There is so much time and $$$ invested in a bunch of fuckin egg heads trying to prove something that should be left theorized, so they prove the Higgs bosson particle exist, how is that going to change anything. The fact is that things have mass in the universe, why? Who gives a shit. Chas.
